New year, Old me – 30 for 30

For the first time in a long time, I’m genuinely not glad to see the back of this year. Don’t get me wrong, that’s not to say I’m not looking forward to all the possibilities that 2016 brings, just that to my surprise I’ve actually really enjoyed 2015, and given how it started out that’s the last thing I was expecting.     This time last year I was tucked up on the sofa shying away from all the new year celebrations as normal, only this time I had a very valid excuse – I’d just been diagnosed with Glandular Fever (or Mono). Not only was I still bed bound, I was under strict instructions not to drink alcohol until fully recovered, which by the way would be about 3 months!... Continue...

Flock me, it’s Flamingo Friday!

You might recall last Christmas I bought these awesome Betty Paige coasters at Oxford Vintage Fashion Fair? Well what would you know, I happened upon the same stand again at the Oxford Vintage Furniture Flea and stumbled upon some flamingo designs. I'm looking forward to a cup of poncy tea using one of these bad boys, what's more I've even managed to track down some flamingo mugs! Sadly, I still didn't manage to get the details of the stall as they don't have a website, but these coasters are super easy to make for anyone brave enough to give them a go at home. Simply take some tiles, some snazzy snaps and bake - check out how to tips from vintage style queen, Pearl Lowe in her book, Vintage... Continue...

It’s that time again…. Flamingo Friday!

It's the end of the work week again, which can only mean one thing...Flamingo Friday! This week I grabbed myself a fantastic little flamingo treat using the super handy app, Depop - Dita Von Teese fans, download it now as she's selling all sorts of stuff on there. But I digress, back to my flamingo find...     I bought this beautiful handcrafted wall/door hanging from Pretty Little Vintage @plvintage_ for £10 and I absolutely adore it - I have plans for this in my new powder room. More on that soon.... The Burly Baker... Continue...

Cocktails and Dreams – Worship Street Whistling Shop

If you’ve read some of my other blogs at the start of the year, you’ll remember that one of my new year resolutions was to try my hand at mixology – well the catalyst for this was all the fab cocktail books I got for Christmas, including The Curious Bartender by Tristan Stephenson. Renowned as one of the leading experts in the bar community on cocktail science and molecular mixology, he set up the bar at Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Cornwall and has trained bartenders at some of the highest regarded bars and restaurants in the UK, including The Ritz. Responsible for two of London’s most reputed speakeasies, Purl and Worship Street Whistling Shop, Tristan is something of a legend when it comes to... Continue...

Hooray – it’s Flamingo Friday!

Yes, it's Friday and that can only mean one thing - flamingos! Check out this gorgeous raffia flamingo bag I picked up from Matalan for just £8. What I love about this is the simplicity - the fabric is beautiful and the design, stylish and subtle. [caption id="attachment_1780" align="alignright" width="640"] Flamingo bag £8 Matalan[/caption] A fab flamingo fix for under a tenner, this bag is perfect for summer, whether you're off punting down the Thames or going for cocktails after work. Team with bamboo bangles and a wiggle dress for a rockabilly tiki look, or wedges and flares that scream retro seventies style. The Burly Baker... Continue...

Flamingo Friday!

So a couple of weeks ago on a whim, I snapped a shot in Biarritz of some flamingos which I posted on Twitter with the hashtag #flamingofriday… when it hit me, why the hell isn't there a Flamingo Friday?! [caption id="attachment_1774" align="alignright" width="640"] Flamingos strutting their stuff at Wheels and Waves, Biarritz[/caption] Well I'm starting one. Like a lot of you retro darlings and pin ups out there, I'm somewhat obsessed with flamingos. Now I'm not quite sure how they came to be such a rockabilly icon but lucky for us the fashion industry had decided to jump on the bandwagon - this summer you can't swing a flamingo shaped croquet mallet for hitting one. So, as you've probably guessed,... Continue...

You gotta have a ticket….. to see Gypsy!

Yeessss! After a 42 year hiatus since it last appeared in the West End in 1973, Gypsy the musical is back! Initially a Broadway musical in 1959, before being made into the 1962 film starring Natalie Wood, Gypsy tells the story of the woman who can only be described as the world’s first celebrity burlesque performer and legend, Gypsy Rose Lee.   [caption id="attachment_1747" align="alignright" width="625"] Gypsy was at home on her typewriter[/caption]   Well actually, it tells more of the story of Gypsy’s Mother, Madam Rose, based on Gypsy’s own 1957 memoir. Though based primarily on the early career of Gypsy and her sister June blazing the Vaudeville trail, and featuring very... Continue...

How to bake friends and influence people….

Believe it or not, despite having the ‘confidence’ to present a radio show, compere and perform burlesque, I’m an exceptionally shy person and have always struggled with socialising and meeting new people. Holding a conversation with those people, getting to know them and build relationships is even harder, but luckily I have an ace card up my sleeve, or apron – I can bake! If you’re venturing into unknown social territory, be it a new office or club (probably not Weight Watchers!) you can’t beat a freshly baked cake to break the ice! Even if your baking skills suck, people will appreciate the gesture, and it’s a great way to get talking to people and make those first nerve-wracking... Continue...

How do I make black buttercream?

Good question! I bet it’s as annoying as trying to get red velvet red, I hear you say…. Well it turns out that it might be easier than you think. This weekend I decided to whip up some Harley-Davidson themed cupcakes to celebrate my return to the company – yaaaaayyyyyyyyyy (but that’s another story for a later date!), so as you’d imagine I decided to go for an orange, black and white theme. Orange – fine, white – hmmm, that could probably do with another post too, black – not so easy. If you’ve ever tried colouring buttercream black before, you’d be forgiven for making the mistake of doing what I and I’m sure thousands of others have done, and adding the black colouring straight... The Afternoon Tea Diaries – with a Twist and a Tail

After seeing all the fabulous Facebook posts from my many burlesque friends about opening parties and celebrations they’d been to at the Playboy Club, London, visiting the infamous watering/rabbit hole had been on my list for some time, so I decided to do something about it. Somewhat skeptical about whether I could even get into a members club, I was pleasantly surprised to discover how accessible it is to mere mortals and bunny enthusiasts, so you can imagine how ecstatic I was when I discovered they also served afternoon tea in Salvatore's Bar - with a playful twist and a tail.... Cocktail connoisseur? Check. Tea lover? Check. Pin up and bunny girl obsessive? Need you even ask?! I decided to... Continue...
