Where can I get vintage crockery in Oxfordshire?

You’re putting on a wonderful tea party for all of your friends – you’ve picked out the perfect decorations, ordered your delicious Burlesque Bakery cupcakes and got your entertainment in order – nipple pastie or fascinator making anyone? But just one problem – you’ve got no crockery for your guests! Being the fabulous affair that it is, you’re obviously not going to just bung a Battenberg on one of your everyday plates you’ve grabbed from the dishwasher, but what’s the alternative? Scavenge around your local charity shops and hope that you stumble across that one scarce cup and saucer set, and hope that it’s suitable, or relentlessly trawl endless ebay listings for mismatched china and... Cake and Cocktails in Witney

So, following my last blog post, you might recall that I’ve decided to take my summer hols and spend some time chilling out (chance would be a fine thing with all the work Burlesque Bakery’s got on, but I can’t complain!) indulging in some of my favourite pastimes. Unsurprisingly, said pastimes usually involve cocktails and copious amounts of cake, and if you’ve read some of my past reviews you’ll know I’m an afternoon tea fanatic, but unfortunately Witney seems to be pretty much tea total – or so I thought… Until I discovered The Great British Gin Party at The Fleece, hosted by Miss Jones (unfortunately not THAT Miss Jones, could you imagine the debauchery?!) Imagine my delight – my... Continue...

Fleurlesque is going on a summer holiday!

Oh good God, did I actually just reference Sir Cliff Richard?! I can’t believe we’re heading towards July, it seems like just yesterday we had our 3rd burlesque show at Fat Lil’s and time has just ran away with me. Please accept my sincere apologies for not blogging about the show sooner, feel free to give me a spank at the next show ;) Luckily the burly super talent that is Tickety Boo isn’t so slack, and she’s written all about it for me! Better still, you can see some super snaps and brilliant footage of her brand new acts which she debuted at the show! As well as the brilliant Boo, I got all gussied up in a rabbit onesie, we bid a fond farewell to retiring performer, Mama Jenufa, and... Continue...

Cupcakes to celebrate a digital landmark!

If you’ve taken a look at the website, you’d be forgiven for thinking Burlesque Bakery is all about glitter and girly cupcakes, but believe it or, we do some pretty serious stuff too! After eager anticipation, the domain name industry got their first look at the latest domain to hit the market last week - .uk, the shorter, sharper domain name, brought to you by the UK internet registry, Nominet, who decided to celebrate the launch on 10th June with cupcakes. Now, just in case you’re wondering what the hell I’m talking about, a domain is a website name – like www.burlesquebakery.co.uk – and now for the first time you can get a UK domain without the .co bit. If you’re still not sure what... Continue...

Fleurlesque – Burlesque at Fat Lil’s Sunday 1st June

It’s Friday and the weekend’s approaching, so I thought I’d treat you all to a Fleurlesque fix and a preview of the fab line up in store on Sunday 1st June! Coeur de plume is the creator and choreographer of S-Burlesque. A pocket sized fire cracker of a performer with 8 years experience in the professional entertainment industry, she’ll be taking to the stage along with the delightful Coco Coquine. Don’t let Coco’s sweetness fool you… this sassy little minx will whet your appetite and stir up a storm. Teasing, teasing, 123…. Testing a new burlesque act

Before I took my burlesque hiatus last year, I wrote about how I planned to develop more acts, as I had only two to my name. Launching my new show, Fleurlesque and performing for a regular local audience has necessitated developing new acts in a timely fashion, and this year I have already developed another 3 with plans for more in the pipeline. However, of those 3 new acts, I have only decided to carry on taking 1 forward. It got me thinking, how long does it take to turn a new act into a staple, and how do you know when you’re onto a winner – or not? I've had the pleasure of working with several burlesque performers recently who've been road testing new acts. They’ve performed them say 1 or 2... Continue...

Jenni Fleur Silver joins Witney Radio!

After launching my first burlesque show at Fat Lil’s in March this year, I’m over the moon to quite literally announce that I’m launching another show next week, and taking my first steps into Radio! The Burly Baker show, named after the blog will be airing on Witney Radio for the first time on Wednesday 30th April, from 7-8pm. Join me for the best burly tunes around to bump and grind to! Having cut my compering teeth earlier this year, I’m really looking forward to the challenges of recording a radio show and working with a totally new medium. I’ve been spending the past few weeks meeting the team and getting acquainted with the studio, and I’m really excited to have the opportunity to... Continue...

Mrs Brown, shagging around and the need for speed!

If you came and saw the second Fleurlesque show at Fat Lil’s on Sunday, you’ll understand this title, and if you didn’t, boy did you miss one hell of a show! This month saw a whole host of new ladies treading the Fleurlesque boards, including the doubly sweet duo, Miss Amarettease and Ginger Cupcake and the singing sensation and gin partial pilot that is Lady Lylith DeHaviland. Continuing with the aviation theme, the out of this world Twinkel Pink threw some classic disco shapes in her Starship Trooper number and treated us to a throwback to the 80’s with her Top Gun tribute, whilst Betty B Bashful, also a sucker for a navy uniform really floated the audiences’ boat! Meanwhile, Mrs Brown and I... Continue...

Burlesque 101 – costume fastenings

Since I’ve dipped my toe back into the burlesque water, I’ve started experimenting with designing elements of my new costumes. Now, despite the fact that my sewing skills have always seemed to fail me, I’m getting on ok, but I confess I’m totally flummoxed by fastenings! So, I decided to ask an expert for some advice – well, two none the less who I’m not exaggerating are infamous in the burly biz for creating some of the most iconic costumes to have graced the stage. They’re so infamous in fact, I’m not sure they really need an introduction... Legendary performer Catherine D’Lish has built a reputation as the best burlesque costume designer and creative director in the business. She... Continue...

Competing in the BHoF Weekender, with Dustin M. Wax

This week the line up for the BHoF14 Weekend was finally announced, and I could think of no better time to publish this great article about the event. A few months ago I noticed some performer Facebook comments about changes to the submission rules, so I decided to get the inside scoop from the Executive Director of the Burlesque Hall of Fame himself, Dustin M. Wax. Here, he gives me the inside scoop on selection and what it takes to win at BHoF! BB How do you go about choosing the Selection Team for the competition? DW We are committed to having a wide variety of perspectives and experience on our Selection Team. We include a Legend, a Miss Exotic World (or other title-holder), an academic, and... Continue...
